Calder Park Drive, Westwood Drive and Robinsons Road: Duplication and intersection upgrades
Calder Park Drive, Westwood Drive and Robinsons Road form a critical north-south corridor that connects the Calder Freeway, the Western Highway and ultimately the Princes Freeway.
Congestion
Westwood Drive, Calder Park Drive and Robinsons Road carries over 30,500 vehicles a day. Traffic modelling commissioned by Council indicates that this will increase to over 38,500 by 2031.
Population
21,000 new residents are expected to be added along this corridor by 2051 adding to the85,478 people who live in this north south corridor including Hillside, Taylors Hill, Frasers Rise, Caroline Springs, Burnside Heights and Burnside.
Safety
In the five-year period between 2015 and 2019 (pre-COVID), there were 85 traffic accidents recorded on the corridor, including 30 serious crashes. In total, 80 people have been injured while using these roads in the last five years.
Solution
• Duplication of Calder Park Drive, Westwood Drive and Robinsons Road with signalised intersections and new bike and pedestrian paths
• A full diamond interchange at Calder Park Drive at Calder Freeway
Economic benefits
Independent analysis by Clarity Consult, based on the Melton Integrated Transport Model, found that the upgrade of Calder Park Drive, Westwood Drive and Robinsons Road would deliver $297 million of benefits to the community over 30 years.
Over 30 years this figure includes:
72,000 hours of travel time saved
5,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases saved
38% reduction in crashes or 220 less crashes
* The Victorian and Australian Governments have committed $100 million for planning to upgrade the Calder Freeway transport corridor. The Victorian Government has committed to remove the level crossing at Calder Park Drive.
